Food for thought...

I'm a smoker. I don't like it. It never used to really bother me, but with the sense of mortality which comes from having dependents, I would love to quit. Anyway, yesterday as I was browsing the beautiful Malabrigo at yarnandkisses.com I realised that I could justify buying 3 balls of Malabrigo A WEEK if I quit smoking.

Yes, each packet of dirty, carcinogenic, smelly cigarettes costs about as much as a skein of Malabrigo.

That means, people, that I could buy 156 skeins a year.

So if we assume that I am talking about laceweight Malabrigo that is 430m per skein x 3 per week - 1290m per week or 67080m per year.

That is 151 times the yarn that Bells used for her Adamas Shawl. Or 167 times the yarn the Happy Spider used for her Nightsong Shawl.

So who agrees that this could be a good motivation for quitting????

OOOOooh when you put it that way, it sounds like you have found a perfect way to convert a habit you want to end into a habit you'd love to continue!! Do I add that even if you cut down on the ciggies you could replace each packet not bought with yarn. At some point you will need that extra ball for an item that will mean you will intentionally not smoke that extra one just so you can get that yarn you need.....good luck with your conversion of habits!!!

I do like the way you think!

Yes, Mmmmmalabrigo is an excellent excuse for quitting, in my opinion!

hell yes! I think that is a marvellous way to go about it - and I speak as someone who still struggles with this all the time. Keep us posted on the progress!

Malabrigo is much nicer than cigarettes, and I have LOVED cigarettes at times.

The perfect motivation. I'll join the cheer squad! If the malabrigo loses its power, there's always a skein of Helen's Lace (from south seas) - that would two week's worth of ciggies! Take up lace knitting!!

Whatever it takes! I still miss smoking, but knitting helps.

In the case of Malabrigo Vs Marlbrough I'm prepared to hedge my bets on the off chance the wool comes in this time. I'd be a little more convicted if you hadn't made a decent sized dent in a pack of ciggies every day of the 20 years of our friendship!!

Yarning and yarning instead of yarning and smoking in January..... I dare ya..... !

PS: i know you actually smoke B&H but you know that wasn't so..... well, poetic.

I think it sounds like a fantastic idea! I only wish that I had something that I could give up in order to buy more wool. :)

Good luck!

I received my first Malabrigo this week, and as an ex smoker I think your idea is fantastic. I used to love smoking so much that I would chain smoke, but the malabrigo could be my next new addiction. I have already bought more!

Good luck
